• He has two older brothers and a younger sister.

• Jason's brother, Tim Newsted, teaches elementary school, and has since 1978.

• He quit school three months before graduation, and headed to Los Angeles, California. On the way, he stopped in Phoenix, Arizona and decided to stay.

• Jason was so impressed by Gene Simmons of Kiss, that he bought his first bass and a small amp at age 13. He played with it, then got bored of it. After 5 years, he took took it out again, liked it better, then started to play seriously.

• Jason's first gig with Metallica was opening for Metal Church at The Country Club in Reseda on the 11th of November 1986. His second gig was the very next night at Jezabelle's in Anaheim.
